Texas Instruments Introduces New Sitara AM62 Processors That Help Expand Edge Artificial Intelligence

2022-06-02 13:01:00

Texas Instruments (TI) introduced new Sitara™ AM62 processors that help expand edge artificial intelligence (AI) processing into next-generation applications. The low-power design of the new processors enables support for dual-screen displays and small-size human-machine interface (HMI) applications. TI will showcase the new AM62 processors and demonstrate system-level solutions for edge AI and electric vehicle charging HMI applications in booth No. 215 at embedded world in Nuremburg, Germany, June 21-23, 2022. The next generation of HMI will bring new ways of interacting with machines, such as enabling gesture recognition to give commands in a noisy factory environment or enabling the control of machines by phones or tablets with a wireless connection. Adding edge AI features to HMI applications, including machine vision, analytics and predictive maintenance, can help bring a new meaning to HMI that goes beyond a mere interface to enable human-machine interaction. AM62 processors bring analytics to edge devices at low power, including suspend states as low as 7 mW and no need to design for thermal considerations, which can give engineers flexibility to deploy these capabilities in size-constrained applications or industrial environments. Bring intelligence to new applications with cost-effective edge AI: Starting at less than US$5, the AM62 processor brings low-cost analytics to HMI devices by enabling basic camera-based image processing and edge AI functions, such as detecting and recognizing objects. AM62 processors also enable dual-screen, full high-definition displays and support for multiple operating systems, including Mainline Linux® and Android™ operating systems. AM62 processors also support both wired and wireless connectivity interfaces. AM62 processors can reduce power consumption in industrial applications by as much as 50% compared to competing devices, enabling an application powered by AA batteries to remain on for over 1,000 hours. This is possible through a simplified power architecture; the device features only two dedicated power rails and five power modes. Deep sleep mode at <5 mW enables longer battery life, while an active power of <1.5 W is made possible by a core voltage of 0.75 V. Reducing system power consumption extends battery life and helps engineers meet design requirements for handheld or size-constrained devices that can be deployed anywhere. Achieving optimal power performance is further simplified with the new TPS65219, a companion PMIC specifically designed to meet AM62 processor power supply requirements. Simplify development complexity with access to hardware and software tools and resources: A wide range of tools and resources for AM62 processors provides flexible options for development and can help reduce cost and complexity barriers to design. Multiple open-source software solutions, including Mainline Linux, simplify the application development process and help achieve faster time to market. A rich hardware ecosystem, including a third-party evaluation module (EVM) starting at USD 25, helps designers get started faster on application designs. Package, availability and pricing: The AM625 and AM623 processors are now available through TI and authorized distributors in a 13-mm-by-13-mm, 425-pin ALW package, with pricing starting at less than USD 5 in 1,000-unit quantities. Full and custom-quantity reels are available on TI.com and through other channels.

Texas Instruments Incorporated Breaks Ground on New 300-Mm Semiconductor Wafer Fabrication Plants in Sherman, Texas

2022-05-18 17:48:00

Texas Instruments broke ground on its new 300-mm semiconductor wafer fabrication plants (or "fabs") in Sherman, Texas. In a ceremony attended by elected officials and community leaders, TI Chairman, President and CEO Rich Templeton celebrated the start of construction on the large private-sector economic investment in Texas history and reiterated the company's commitment to expanding its internal manufacturing capacity for the long term. The potential $30 billion investment includes plans for four fabs to meet demand over time, supporting as many as 3,000 direct jobs. The new fabs will manufacture tens of millions of analog and embedded processing chips daily that will go into electronics everywhere. The company has a long-standing commitment to responsible, sustainable manufacturing. The new fabs will be designed to meet one of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building rating system's high levels of structural efficiency and sustainability: LEED Gold. Advanced 300-mm equipment and processes in Sherman will further reduce waste, water and energy consumption.

Texas Instruments Drives Isolation Technology Forward with New Solid-State Relays That Provide Reliability

2022-05-10 05:00:00

Texas Instruments (TI) introduced a new portfolio of solid-state relays, including automotive-qualified isolated drivers and switches, that deliver reliability to help make electric vehicles (EVs) safer. The new isolated solid-state relays also provide the smallest solution size while reducing the bill-of-materials (BOM) cost of powertrain and 800-V battery-management systems. The TPSI3050-Q1 isolated switch driver with an integrated 10-V gate supply and the TPSI2140-Q1 1,400-V, 50-mA isolated switch both integrate power and signal isolation across a single barrier using a unique approach that improves reliability, while significantly reducing solution size and cost compared to existing electromechanical relays and solid-state photorelays. The devices are the first in a new solid-state relays portfolio that will also include ICs designed for high-voltage industrial applications. The new solid-state relays can disconnect and connect loads through a single isolation barrier in microseconds – compared to milliseconds for electromechanical relays – to enable safer operation of high-voltage automotive systems. The TPSI3050-Q1, which offers reinforced isolation up to 5 kVRMS, also provides an operating lifetime that's 10 times higher than electromechanical relays, which can degrade over time. Additionally, the TPSI2140-Q1 offers basic isolation up to 3.75 kVRMS, enabling it to achieve more than four times higher time-dependent dielectric breakdown reliability than solid-state photorelays. The solid-state relays integrate power and signal transfer in a single chip while also eliminating at least three components from their designs, significantly reducing solution size while cutting BOM costs by as much as 50%. The TPSI3050-Q1 reduces solution size up to 90% compared to mechanical relay solutions by integrating the functions of an isolated power supply, digital isolator and gate driver. The TPSI2140-Q1 reduces solution size by as much as 50% compared to traditional solid-state photorelay solutions by integrating a signal field-effect transistor and resistors, and eliminating the need for a reed relay.

Texas Instruments Incorporated Announces the Introduction of New Bidirectional Buck/Boost Converter with an Ultra-Low Quiescent Current

2021-11-03 05:01:00

Texas Instruments Incorporated introduced a new bidirectional buck/boost converter with an ultra-low quiescent current (IQ) of 60 nA one-third the IQ of competing boost converters. The TPS61094 buck/boost converter integrates a buck mode for supercapacitor charging while providing ultra-low IQ, enabling engineers to extend battery life by as much as 20% when compared to commonly used hybrid-layer capacitors (HLCs). Supercapacitor charging and discharging helps support peak loads and backup power, which are important for continuous operation in battery-powered industrial applications such as smart meters, smoke detectors and video doorbells, as well as medical applications. Engineers designing battery-operated systems frequently face a common design challenge: a need to achieve high efficiency at no- or light-load conditions, in the low milliampere or microampere range. This requires power supplies to regulate their output while maintaining ultra-low supply current in the nanoampere range. The TPS61094 combines two key benefits that previously were trade-offs, the design simplicity of using an integrated buck/boost converter and the extended battery life enabled by high output current and low IQ. To learn more, read the technical article, "3 benefits of using a low-IQ buck/boost converter to extend battery life in flow meters.

Texas Instruments Introduces Smallest and Most Accurate 1.5-W Isolated DC/DC Bias-Supply Module

2021-09-27 17:00:00

Texas Instruments introduced the industry's smallest and most accurate 1.5-W isolated DC/DC bias-supply module. The UCC14240-Q1 uses a proprietary integrated transformer technology to enable designers to cut their power solution size in half for use in high-voltage environments such as electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid EVs, motor-drive systems and grid-tied inverters. With the accelerating growth of the EV market, automotive design engineers are looking for ways to improve efficiency and reliability, while also reducing the weight of the heaviest part of the EV: the powertrain. To help meet the need for smaller, more reliable systems to extend driving range, engineers are moving to a distributed power architecture, a scheme where every isolated gate driver has a dedicated bias supply. This architecture improves how the system reacts to single-point failures. For example, if one bias supply fails, the other bias supplies remain operational, as do their paired gate drivers— helping to keep a vehicle safely on the road. Fully integrated power solutions such as the UCC14240-Q1 help engineers take advantage of distributed architecture. Extend driving range with industry-leading power density and system efficiency. The UCC14240-Q1 offers size and efficiency advantages that enable greater power density and system efficiency, which can allow vehicles to drive farther between charges. The 3.55-mm height and small footprint of the UCC14240-Q1 enable designers to reduce the power solution volume by as much as 50%, packing more power in half the size. The height reduction also gives engineers the full flexibility to place the module on either side of the printed circuit board. This dual-output power module offers 60% efficiency – twice that of traditional bias supplies – doubling the power density and helping increase vehicle driving range. By delivering more than 1.5 W at ambient temperatures of 105°C, the UCC14240-Q1 enables engineers to drive isolated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) switches at high frequencies. Achieve high CMTI and ultra-low EMI to speed time to market: By leveraging TI's integrated transformer technology with a 3.5-pF primary-to-secondary capacitance, the UCC14240-Q1 can mitigate EMI caused by high-speed switching and comfortably achieve common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) performance of more than 150 V/ns. Featuring soft switching, spread-spectrum modulation, shielding and low parasitics, the UCC14240-Q1 enables designs to more easily meet the electromagnetic compatibility standards of Comité International Spécial des Perturbations Radioélectriques (CISPR) 25 and CISPR 32, speeding time to market. Protect vehicle performance with industry-best accuracy over temperature and isolation: The UCC14240-Q1's integrated closed-loop control enables ±1.0% accuracy from -40°C to 150°C. The device's tight tolerance enables the use of smaller power switches while also improving overcurrent protection. Fault monitoring, overcurrent protection, overpower protection and overtemperature protection are all fully integrated. The UCC14240-Q1 offers third-party-certified 3-kVrms isolation and delivers the industry's best vibration immunity due to its ultra-low weight and 3.55-mm height. Package, availability and pricing: The UCC14240-Q1 is available in pre-production quantities from TI in a 36-pin, 12.8-mm-by-10.3-mm-by-3.55-mm shrink small-outline package. Pricing starts at USD 4.20 in 1,000-unit quantities. Engineers can evaluate this product with the UCC14240Q1EVM-052 evaluation module, available on TI.com for USD 59.

Balance Sheet Analysis

Overall, Texas Instruments's critical balance sheet metrics appear to signal strong support and a high likelihood of positive growth going forward. Texas Instruments reported solid equity numbers this period. At filing, equity was reported as 14017.0, representing 5.1% change from the previous period. Companies in the same sector and market capitalization will usually be affected by up to 4.5 percent by this parameter. This performance is significantly more impressive than its peers and competitors. The company's equity movement component, therefore, received a grade of 87. Also, Texas Instruments publishes solid book value factor metrics in this report. Price to book ratio (P/B) now sits at 11.6 and represents a -11.4% change from the previous report. These book value factor numbers show that management has been prudent in focusing on efficient growth. We believe the stock price has room to grow to reflect its intrinsic value accurately. Consequently, their book value factors movement received a grade of 84. That said, one metric, Cash & Equivalents, stood out as particularly concerning. Texas Instruments reported concerning cash and cash equivalents metrics in this filing. Specifically, they reported that cash and cash equivalents were 3505.0, representing a -24.3% change from the last period. Their anemic growth in cash and cash equivalents, specifically in contrast to their industry peers' performance, should hurt their stock price. Its cash and cash equivalents movement, therefore, received a grade of 46. Consequently, their balance sheet earned a rank of 76.
