Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. announced the launch of its A33110 and A33115 magnetic position sensors at the Sensors Converge Conference in San Jose, CA. Designed for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) applications that require high levels of accuracy and heterogeneous signal redundancy, Allegro’s newest sensors combine the company’s vertical Hall technology (VHT) with cutting-edge tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) technology in a single sensor package. These angle sensors are the first of their kind to feature this technology combination in a single package. This VHT + TMR offering is a superior heterogeneous redundant sensor solution and is an essential step toward enabling the reliability required for advanced levels of automation in vehicles. Future automated and autonomous vehicles require advanced electric power steering (EPS) systems with precise motor control capabilities, as well as brake-by-wire or electromechanical braking systems with fast response time. Present-day systems commonly use giant magnetoresistance (GMR) or Hall-effect sensors. Compared to the GMR equivalents, Allegro’s innovative TMR-on-silicon technology offers improved resolution and accuracy, providing up to eight times greater sensitivity. Measured against traditional Hall-effect sensors, the improvement in resolution is even more pronounced. The safe operation of a vehicle requires the higher level of diagnostic coverage in its safety-critical systems. Allegro’s VHT featured in the new A33110 and A33115 enables accurate safety checks, including low-field and missing-magnet detection. These high-resolution sensors are ASIL D-compliant, with heterogeneous redundancy reducing the likelihood of dependent failures by leveraging the best of both TMR technology and VHT. Allegro’s A33110 and A33115 sensors provide magnetic angle sensing via both the primary (TMR) and secondary (vertical Hall) transducers, each of which are processed by two independent channels, each with independent regulators and temperature sensors. This unique configuration enables the high levels of safety and diagnostic coverage needed for automated driving, including on-chip channel-to-channel angle comparison and independent processing in digital signal paths, with no shared digital resources. Advanced algorithms in the A33110 and A33115 deliver the fast response time, independent gain/offset correction, angle calculation, and linearization capabilities demanded by safety-critical ADAS applications. The A33115 also includes a turns counter that tracks motion in 90-degree increments and a low-power mode with a user-programmable duty cycle that reduces power consumption when the IC is in a key-off position. Allegro MicroSystems ships more than 200 million units into ADAS applications annually, serving a global and diverse customer base. The A33110 and A33115 are the latest in Allegro’s portfolio of innovations for ADAS applications and were developed in close collaboration with key market-leading OEM and Tier 1 customers.

On June 16, 2022, Noriharu Fujita notified the Board of Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. of his decision to resign from the Board, effective June 20, 2022. Mr. Fujita’s resignation is not the result of any disagreement between Mr. Fujita and the Company or its management on any matter relating to the Company’s operations, policies or practices. On June 20, 2022, at the recommendation of the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and in accordance with the Amended and Restated Stockholders Agreement, the Board took the following actions, each of which was effective June 20, 2022: (i) increased the size of the Board from ten to 11 directors; (ii) elected Katsumi Kawashima to the Board as Mr. Fujita’s successor as a Class I Director, to serve until the Company’s 2024 annual meeting of shareholders and until his successor is duly elected and qualified; and (iii) elected Kojiro Hatano to the Board as a Class II Director, to serve until the Company’s 2022 annual meeting of shareholders and until his successor is duly elected and qualified. Messrs. Kawashima and Hatano were elected to the Board as designees of Sanken pursuant to and as set forth in Section 1(b) of the Amended and Restated Stockholders Agreement. In addition, since May 2021, Mr. Hatano has served as a member of the board of directors of PSL, and he has served on the board of directors of Sanken Electric Europe Limited since March 2020.

Its newest offerings, the A89332 and A89332-1, are designed to meet the evolving needs of cooling systems in today’s data centers offering flexible options for designers. Available with innovative integrated power loss brake (A89332) and AC-loss (A89332-1) features, these drivers enable compact, high-airflow fan designs to improve thermal efficiency, reducing energy use and data center costs. When server fans malfunction or break, backflow causes them to go into reverse rotation. The other fans have to work harder to compensate for the resulting airflow, which increases power consumption. The traditional solution to preventing reverse rotation is adding external circuitry and components to function as the power loss brake—components that do not fit into 1U fans. This approach requires software coding, increases bill of material (BoM) size, and increases time to market. Addressing these pain points, the A89332’s integrated power loss brake (PLB) function applies a brake to fans that aren’t working properly and stops them from spinning, with braking performance that’s four times better than discrete implementations. This eliminates unnecessary power consumption and increases thermal efficiency, ultimately reducing data center costs. When combined with the A89332-1’s AC loss logic, Allegro is now able to serve the high-end server market with the industry’s smallest gate driver, offered in a 4mm x 4mm QFN package that’s 36% smaller than comparable options—perfect for “donut” circuit boards. Allegro offers the industry’s only code-free solutions for server cooling fans; the company’s innovative embedded algorithms and graphical user interface (GUI) eliminate the need for an additional Hall-effect position sensor and motor control unit (MCU), and no additional software development is required. This helps system designers reduce R&D overhead, simplify motor tuning, and improve time to market. The reduced need for external components further helps optimize system cost and improve reliability, and integrated functionality gives customers increased flexibility when faced with tight design requirements. Both gate drivers build on Allegro’s history and experience developing unique motor control devices for the automotive and industrial markets. With more than three billion shipped in the last decade, the company’s trusted and reliable motor drivers have helped manufacturers innovate safer, more robust motor-drive solutions with increased reliability. With built-in capabilities including flexible interface logic, EMI mitigation with programmable gate drive, motor current feedback and multiple diagnostic features, these devices require very few external components and are available in a 4x4 mm QFN package, 36% smaller than comparable 5x5 mm devices. The A89505 and A89506 are ideal for vehicle applications such as window and door actuators, EV charger locks, electronic parking brakes, and folding mirrors. Their solid-state design also makes them ideal for battery-powered applications that incorporate brushed DC motors such as building automation and robotics, improving reliability and battery life while facilitating smaller design footprints. Both drivers include built-in current sensing capabilities, eliminating the need for external current sense resistors and reducing external component requirements to as few as seven. Integrated diagnostics further obviate the need for additional microprocessor programming and addition circuitry. Designers can fit the functionality they need into smaller system footprints, reducing bills of materials and printed circuit board sizes while increasing performance and improving the consumer experience. The A89505 and A89506 build on Allegro’s decades of motor control expertise. Both are capable of 50V absolute maximum supply voltages and offer higher gate drive voltage at low VBB and better efficiency when running on battery power, allowing designers to specify lower-cost FETs. They even enable lower current draw in standby states to reduce total battery load.

The multi-topology single-ended controller design, combined with wide input/output voltage capability, provides a universal solution for a wide variety of use cases and/or number of LEDs. Options for SPI-based control or EEPROM-based end-of-line programming for standalone operation further extend the range of possibilities. The A80804 is Allegro’s first four-channel linear driver for high-power LEDs. In addition to targeted applications such as DRL/position and stop/tail lights, it gives lighting designers increased design flexibility for popular features such as sequential turn signals, animation effects, and theater-style transitions. No switching elements or inductors are required, and the A80804’s low EMI output helps it achieve CISPR25 Class 5 compliance. It also offers multiple analog and PWM dimming methods, dual brightness mode operation, and is configurable without the need for a microcontroller. Embedded Motion Control Accelerates Sustainability Roadmaps: The A89307 includes a hardware-based algorithm, which requires no external sensors or software development; the user simply selects parameters using a simple GUI interface and loads them into the IC’s on-chip E2EPROM. With only five external components, the A89307 helps designers lower material costs by reducing BOM components and facilitating very small system footprints for in-motor PCBs. Its fully integrated algorithm can even eliminate the need for a separate microprocessor. Modes of operation include open-loop PWM or fully programmable closed-loop speed control. In closed-loop mode, the customer can program the PWM-to-speed relationship to match the PWM commands provided by an external ECU. Field weakening is included to improve performance at high speed. Low-speed operation and windmilling start-up are just a few of the features included in the A89307 hardware based digital algorithm. While designed for xEV battery cooling fans, the A89307 can also be used in HVAC blowers as well as liquid pumps in traction inverter cooling systems. The external gate drive allows the device to be flexible enough to drive a wide range of motor powers up to 500W.
