Lumentum Holdings Inc. and Ambarella, Inc. Offer Unique Combination of Edge AI and Privacy for Smarter Building Automation and Occupancy Sensor Systems

2022-04-05 09:00:00

Lumentum Holdings Inc. and Ambarella, Inc. announced a new joint reference design that uniquely combines edge artificial intelligence (AI) with privacy, enabling new possibilities for smart building applications. Called Vision-D, this design combines Lumentum’s flood illuminator module for extremely accurate time-of-flight (ToF) 3D sensing, with Ambarella’s CV22 edge AI SoC, which provides AI performance per watt. This combination allows small AIoT sensors with local processing to be blanketed across buildings for applications such as occupancy monitoring, intelligent space management and smart retail. Additionally, ToF 3D sensing maintains privacy by generating a point cloud with granular 3D information, but without any personally identifiable information, for applications such as healthcare and eldercare. In addition to supporting multiple image sensor inputs, Ambarella’s CV22 SoC also offers a rich set of peripheral interfaces for a broad range of other sensors—including humidity, temperature and audio—to enhance environmental perception. The Lumentum10 W flood illuminator module incorporates a high-performance, three-junction vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array for ToF 3D sensing. The Vision-D reference design provides a versatile platform for a wide range of applications in smart building automation, healthcare, smart retail and home security. Examples include smart PIRs for home security that are able to differentiate pets from intruders; hotel environmental and scheduling systems that can intelligently adjust the HVAC temperature in reserved rooms based on real-time occupancy; and remote monitoring of aging parents without invading their privacy. Regardless of the location, AI algorithms running on this reference design can monitor occupants for sudden falls or medical events, intelligently and immediately triggering a request for emergency services. Availability: The new Vision-D joint reference design is available now.

This family enables centralized, single-chip processing for multi-sensor perception—including high-resolution vision, radar, ultrasonic and lidar—as well as deep fusion for multiple sensor modalities and AV path planning. The result is robust ADAS and L2+ to Level 4 autonomous driving (AD) systems with greater levels of environmental perception in challenging lighting, weather and driving conditions for both driver viewing and machine perception. The CV3 marks the debut of Ambarella’s next-generation CVflow architecture, which continues the company’s algorithm-first design philosophy. This drove the development of the on-chip neural vector processor (NVP), with up to 500 eTOPS of AI compute, power efficiency and support for the latest advancements in neural network (NN) inferences. The NVP is also enhanced to run advanced radar perception software, such as the Oculii adaptive AI software algorithms. This is complemented by a new floating-point general vector processor (GVP) designed to offload classical computer vision and radar processing from the NVP engines, and floating-point-intensive algorithms from the Arm CPUs. The CV3 family’s unique hardware scalability allows automakers to unify their software stacks across their entire retail portfolios, while reducing the cost and complexity of software development. This scalability directly addresses the rising complexity of automotive software by providing an alternative to the fragmented ADAS SoC offerings from competitors. Additionally, the CV3 family accelerates automakers’ development timelines while simplifying the deployment of new features by providing the headroom for a single, robust over-the-air (OTA) update implementation. This new family has multiple options to meet the product strategies of OEMs and Tier 1s, alike, from its low-power SoCs for regulatory-class, forward-facing cameras, scaling all the way to premium SoCs for Level 4 fully automated driving. This new family also supports both central and zonal architectures. In addition to covering the whole AD stack, the CV3 can simultaneously process in-cabin sensing applications, including driver and occupant monitoring. Ambarella’s complete line of AI perception SoCs is uniquely positioned to support the full range of viewing, recording, sensing and path planning applications, from basic ADAS to L4 AVs. This means that automakers no longer need to develop different software stacks for their entry-level, mid-range and premium vehicles, as they can use Ambarella’s unified CVflow platform across all models, saving engineering costs while enabling faster responses to market trends. Leveraging a comprehensive set of mature software tools and a robust SDK, Ambarella’s flexible CVflow AI platform provides customers with an unprecedented opportunity to innovate and differentiate their products in the marketplace. To further expand this capability, Ambarella has cultivated a broad ecosystem of software partners for the CVflow platform, working closely with them to port and optimize their applications. The CV3 also integrates Ambarella’s next-generation ISP, extending the company’s lead in image signal processing quality. By simultaneously supporting up to 12 physical or 20 virtual cameras, a single CV3 can process the entire sensor suite, which for typical L2+ deployments includes 10 cameras, five radar modules and numerous ultrasonic sensors. Additionally, higher-performance stereo and dense optical flow engines provide greater depth and motion perception. Additional features of the new CV3 central domain controller family include: Automotive GPU for applications such as 3D surround-view rendering; Hardware security module, enabling the isolation of different domains and secure software provisioning. PCIe high-speed interfaces for ultra-low-latency communications. Processing headroom for OTA software updates and testing software stacks in shadow mode. The first SoCs in the CV3 family are expected to be available for sampling during the first half of 2022.

Dongfeng Motor Group and Ambarella, Inc. Partner on Driver Monitoring System for Yixuan Max Mass-Production Vehicle

2021-09-22 09:00:00

Ambarella, Inc. announced that it partnered with Dongfeng Fengshen (Aeolus), a mid-to-high-end brand of the Dongfeng Motor Group, to build a Driver Monitoring System (DMS) based on Ambarella’s CV25 AI vision SoC and development platform. The first mass-production application of this system is in the Dongfeng Fengshen Yixuan Max, which launched on September 1st. Dongfeng Fengshen is the product from Dongfeng Passenger Vehicles. Yixuan Max adopts Dongfeng’s new Mach Power, a new engine brand from Dongfeng Motor. Yixuan Max is also the first compact HEV sports vehicle based on DSMA, a framework that was independently designed and developed. Additionally, Yixuan Max is expected to be a star product in Dongfeng Fengshen’s strategic transformation. Its speedy, streamlined design, along with Yixuan Max’s dynamic modeling, reflects the aesthetics of the word “express” in its slogan. The complete slogan is “My Sedan, My Express!” This vehicle’s cutting-edge technology includes a high-definition intelligent camera and millimeter-wave radar. Additionally, its intelligent recognition can reach up to 210 meters in front and provides 360° full coverage around the vehicle, assisting with multi-dimensional safe driving in a variety of scenarios, such as intersections, changing lanes, driving at high speeds, parking, etc. In particular, this vehicle’s DMS, also known as a Fatigue Alarm System—which is powered by the Ambarella CV25 AI vision automotive-grade SoC—promotes driving safety, reduces the possibility of car accidents, and protects the safety of the driver and their property. Based on computer vision imaging and deep learning AI technology, this DMS detects the driver’s behavior and physiological state via eye-tracking and object detection, which allows this computer vision system to understand the driver’s cognitive and physical state, among other indicators. When the driver is driving dangerously, including while distracted, fatigued, dozing, smoking, talking on the telephone and other unsafe behaviors, the DMS will warn the driver within the predetermined time set in the system. Europe will begin to require DMS in vehicles manufactured from 2025 onward. With its DMS, the Dongfeng Fengshen Yixuan Max meets this requirement well in advance of that date. The high-performance, low-power Ambarella CV25 family of SoCs integrates Ambarella’s CVflow® AI engine to accelerate various neural network algorithms. Additionally, this SoC’s high-quality image signal processing unit, professional image processing algorithms, and optimization for specific camera modules and user scenarios ensure excellent image quality. Cash Flow Analysis

Ambarella appears likely to maintain its strong cash flow metrics and momentum going forward. Ambarella did a great job related to free cash flow this period, which stood at 1.7, representing a 118.8% change from the previous filing. Companies in the same industry and market capitalization are typically affected by this parameter by up to 7.4%. These free cash flow numbers show that management has executed well while generating cash flow and encouraging growth. Therefore, its free cash flow movement earned a score of 95. Also, Ambarella's strong net cash flow numbers, which were -26.9 in this filing, showed a 61.7% change from the last period. Their net cash flow metrics are especially remarkable relative to their peers. Hence, its net cash flow earned a score of 84. At the same time, one critical cash flow metric, Capital Expenditure, was notably weak. Ambarella's published capital expenditures (CapEx) numbers were discouraging and reflected management's unbalanced growth strategy. Ambarella recorded CapEx of -12.4, which represents a -28.4% change from the previous report. The company's disappointing CapEx growth is expected to stunt the momentum they hoped for this period. Its CapEx movement, therefore, received a grade of 45. Their cash flow received an overall score of 80.
