GlobalFoundries Unveils GF Labs to Accelerate Technology Innovation

2022-05-19 18:12:00

At its annual GF Technology Summit (GTS), GlobalFoundries announced the launch of GF Labs, a new program that extends the development horizon of innovative, differentiated semiconductor technology and broadens the company's portfolio of feature-rich and enablement solutions. GF Labs will focus on advancing new technology and long-term roadmap differentiation that will enable GF customers to develop innovative products and accelerate their time-to-market. Semiconductor innovation is essential to the growth and development of technology megatrends that are reshaping the global economy including the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, 6G, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing and next generation automotive, all of which are propelling semiconductor market revenue to more than $1.3 trillion by the end of the decade, according to International Business Strategies. GF has a proven track record of innovating novel materials such as FD-SOI on 22FDX®, and novel device architectures that enabled GF Fotonix™, the company's recently announced next generation silicon photonics platform. GF Labs expands and accelerates this innovation momentum by creating an open framework of internal and external research and development initiatives that deliver a differentiated pipeline of market-driven process technology solutions for future data-centric, connected, intelligent and secure applications. GF has a proven track record of building partnerships with startup innovators, industry consortia, material suppliers, universities and government entities worldwide. Leveraging GF's extensive patent portfolio and deep technical expertise in digital, analog, mixed-signal, RF and embedded memory, GF Labs will harvest capabilities from a broad research platform including the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (IMEC) in Belgium, Fraunhofer in Germany, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the U.S., and the Institute for Microelectronics in Singapore, along with a broad network of university partnerships. Research and development within GF Labs is underway with a slate of innovative technology capabilities and solutions already in development such as radio frequency silicon on insulator (RFSOI) and silicon-germanium (SiGe). GF will continue to invest to expand and develop tailored solutions, with GF Labs serving as the R&D engine accelerating differentiated solutions based on wide-band-gap semiconductors that go beyond the traditional approach of shrinking transistors. Additional program details and partners will be announced in the second half of 2022.

U.S. Department of Defense and GlobalFoundries Partner to Secure Supply of Chips Critical to National Security Systems

2022-05-02 20:30:00

GlobalFoundries Inc. announced a $117 million agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to provide a strategic supply of U.S.-made semiconductors that are critical to national security systems. Securely manufactured at GF's most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility, Fab 8 in Malta, New York, the chips will be used in some of the nation's most sensitive defense and aerospace applications. Building upon the longstanding partnership between the DoD and GF, the new agreement provides the DoD with a supply of semiconductor chips manufactured on GF's differentiated 45nm SOI platform. Under the agreement, the manufacturing of these chips will be transferred to GF's Fab 8 from GF's Fab 10 in East Fishkill, New York. In addition to providing continuity of supply for the DoD, this technology transfer to Fab 8 will enable GF to continue offering its 45nm SOI platform to commercial customers after GF's Fab 10 transitions to ON Semiconductor as previously announced in April 2019. Under the agreement, the DoD awarded $117 million to GF. The first chips from the agreement are targeted to begin delivery in 2023.

BAE Systems Collaborates With GLOBALFOUNDRIES to Produce Radiation-Hardened Single Board Computers for Space

2021-08-23 14:00:00

BAE Systems radiation-hardened RAD510 System on Chip (SoC) for space-based computing is entering fabrication. Designed by BAE Systems and manufactured by GLOBALFOUNDRIES (GF), the RAD510 SoC will be the core of a single board computer (SBC) with twice the performance capability of the industry standard RAD750® microprocessor. The new SBC will provide Power Architecture software-compatible processing that is more advanced than the RAD750 radiation-hardened general purpose processor, while demanding less power from its spacecraft. The RAD510 SoC is already being integrated into SBCs that will be available to space agencies and spacecraft manufacturers this year. For ease of transition, the software is compatible with both the RAD750 and RAD5545 computers. The BAE Systems family of space-based electronics can withstand radiation doses a million times stronger than a fatal human dose; that durability is valued on missions like GPS III, Mars rovers, and many satellites on-orbit today. The RAD510 SBC also requires less power and has the radiation advantages of RH45 45nm silicon-on-isolator (SOI) technology. BAE Systems’ facility in Manassas, Va. is a U.S. Department of Defense Category 1A Microelectronics Trusted Source. The company’s radiation-hardened electronics have been on-board satellites and spacecraft for almost 30 years, delivering long-lasting computing power in extreme environments. The RAD510 SoCs are manufactured at GF’s Fab 10 facility in East Fishkill, N.Y., also a U.S. Department of Defense Category 1A Microelectronics Trusted Source. GF and BAE Systems have initiated the process of transitioning the manufacturing of 45 nm SOI technology to GF’s most advanced facility, Fab 8 in Malta, N.Y., making it available to the space community in the future. BAE Systems also offers a suite of radiation-hardened Serial RapidIO network products which complement the RAD510 SBC and allow the user to efficiently manage and route data through the system. These include the RADNET® 1848-PS, an 18-Port RapidIO Packet Switch, the RADNET 1616-XP Crosspoint, a protocol agnostic SerDes signal circuit switch and replicator, and the RADNET SRIO-EP, a Serial RapidIO endpoint. GF delivers differentiated feature-rich solutions that enable its customers to develop innovative products for high-growth market segments. The company provides a broad range of platforms and features with a unique mix of design, development and fabrication services. With an at-scale manufacturing footprint spanning the U.S., Europe and Asia, GF has the flexibility and agility to meet the dynamic needs of customers across the globe. GF is owned by Mubadala Investment Company.

GlobalFoundries CEO Says Chip Maker Sticking to 2022 IPO Plan, Intel Takeover Bid is ‘Speculation’

2021-07-20 02:58:00

GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. is sticking with its plan for an initial public offering next year, according to Chief Executive Officer Tom Caulfield. Reports that GlobalFoundries is the subject of a takeover bid by Intel Corporation (NasdaqGS:INTC) are speculation, he said. “There’s nothing there in that discussion,” Caulfield said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. Because the chip maker is moving toward a share sale, “you can expect a lot of speculation to take place,” he said. Intel has studied the feasibility of buying US-based GlobalFoundries, people familiar with the matter said last week, asking not to be identified because deliberations are private. But no formal takeover approach has been made to GlobalFoundries owner Mubadala Investment Co. and the two sides are not engaged in active talks, the people said. Mubadala created GlobalFoundries by purchasing the manufacturing operations of Advanced Micro Devices in 2009 and later combining it with Singapore’s Chartered Semiconductor. The fund continues to work with advisers on plans to list the business at a value of around US$30 billion, the people said. “I think they are interested in holding onto GF,” Caulfield said. “They think this asset has become a star in their portfolio”.

GlobalFoundries Plans to Build New Fab in Upstate New York in Private-Public Partnership to Support U.S. Semiconductor Manufacturing

2021-07-19 15:30:00

GlobalFoundries announced its expansion plans for its most advanced manufacturing facility in upstate New York over the coming years. These plans include immediate investments to address the global chip shortage at its existing Fab 8 facility as well as construction of a new fab on the same campus that will double the site's capacity. The announcement was made as the company convened leaders from government and industry to progress the national discussion around solving U.S. semiconductor supply chain challenges. GF will invest $1 billion to immediately add an additional 150,000 wafers per year within its existing fab to help address the global chip shortage. Following that, GF plans to construct a new fab that will create more than 1,000 new direct high-tech jobs and thousands more indirect jobs including high-paying construction jobs for the region. Following the successful investment model of Fab 8, GF is planning to fund the new facility through private-public partnerships including customers, federal and state investments. This new capacity will serve the growing demand for secure, feature-rich chips needed by high-growth markets including automotive, 5G connectivity and the Internet of Things. The facility will also support national security requirements for a secure supply chain. These investments to expand GF's U.S. manufacturing footprint are part of the company's broader global expansion plans that include the recently announced new fab in Singapore and $1 billion planned investment to expand in Germany, all to meet the growing demand from customers worldwide.

Cash Flow Analysis

GLOBALFOUNDRIES appears likely to maintain its strong cash flow metrics and momentum going forward. GLOBALFOUNDRIES's published free cash flow numbers were substantial and reflected management's focus on a healthy change strategy. GLOBALFOUNDRIES recorded free cash flow of 2.8, which represents a 31.1% change from the previous report. Companies in the same industry and market capitalization are typically affected by this parameter by up to 7.4%. The company's free cash flow metrics are especially strong compared to its peers. Management seems to balance cash flow management, asset growth, and resource allocations in general. The company's free cash flow movement, therefore, received a grade of 86. Also, GLOBALFOUNDRIES's published asset turnover numbers were encouraging and reflected management's balanced change strategy. GLOBALFOUNDRIES recorded asset turnover of 0.5, which represents a 0.0% change from the previous report. This metric might have a 10.7 percent impact on companies in the same industry and with the same market capitalization. Their asset turnover numbers are significantly more impressive when contrasted against their peers and competitors. Correspondingly, their asset turnover movement received a grade of 64. That said, one metric, Capital Expenditure, stood out as strongly negative. GLOBALFOUNDRIES's published capital expenditures (CapEx) numbers were discouraging and reflected management's unbalanced growth strategy. GLOBALFOUNDRIES recorded CapEx of -1726.9, which represents a -29.1% change from the previous report. This performance is all the more uninspiring relative to their peers and competitors. Consequently, their CapEx movement received a grade of 45. Because the company's management is doing an excellent job managing these critical metrics, the cash flow was given a score of 64.
