Vulcan Energy Resources Limited Provides Update on Zero Carbon Lithium Project

2022-06-16 22:20:00

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited provided a progress update for its Zero Carbon Lithium Project in the Upper Rhine Valley Germany. The City Council of Landau, which covers part of Vulcan's geothermal production license at Insheim, as well as the Landau Süd production license where Vulcan has a brine offtake agreement with the operator, has voted to: o support geothermal energy production in the area; o take a positive stance towards the extraction of lithium from geothermal brine, upon consideration of climate protection goals as well as the interests of the regional - urban development in the area. The Insheim region forms a core part of Vulcan's Phase 1 development plans, currently being developed as part of its Phase 1 Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS). This aims to grow out geothermal renewable energy production in the Upper Rhine Valley Brine Field (URVBF) starting from around its core producing plant at Insheim, and to develop lithium extraction and processing from the same production, with zero fossil fuels and net zero carbon footprint. The positive City Council vote towards geothermal energy and lithium extraction is an important development milestone and first step of the community to enable geothermal-lithium development and marks a significant point in the progress of Vulcan's Zero Carbon LithiumTM business in Europe. The City Council will follow the geothermal and lithium development closely and will actively cooperate to align the development with the environmental goals and concerns of the community of Landau. In addition, Vulcan has acquired new exploration licenses, increasing Vulcan's area in the URBVF by 141km2 to a total of 1,163km2. The new exploration licenses, designated Flaggenturm (geothermal) and Fuchsmantel (lithium) complement Vulcan's pipeline of future growth opportunities for what is already the largest JORC compliant lithium resource in Europe.

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited to Acquire Drill Rigs for Zero Carbon Lithium Project

2021-11-18 22:13:00

Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd. has agreed to acquire two electric drill rigs as part of the Company's Zero Carbon LithiumTM Project. The specialised rigs can drill to the target depth required for deep geothermal energy wells in the Upper Rhine Valley, Germany. The deep geothermal rigs represent a scarce, strategic asset for Vulcan, as Europe navigates an energy crisis and the increasing need for renewable heating. The electric rigs will ensure drilling can be conducted with minimum greenhouse gas emissions, consistent with Vulcan's strict carbon neutral focus. The deep geothermal rigs give Vulcan the potential to generate renewable energy for local communities in Germany (heat and/or power, depending on location), at a critical time for decarbonisation in Europe. Funded with a portion of the proceeds from the Company's recent $200 million Placement, the acquisition will assist with timely project development, targeting Phase 1 production in 2024. Vulcan has commenced assembling an experienced in-house drilling team, which will operate under the company name "VERCANA GmbH (Ltd.)". Headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany, VERCANA and its operations will create approximately 30 regional jobs. Following refurbishment, the rigs will be operation-ready in late 2022. A general update on the renewable energy project developments within the Zero Carbon Lithium Project is provided.

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited Provides Lithium Processing Division Update

2021-11-11 21:23:00

Vulcan Energy Resources provided an update on the activities of its lithium processing division. Lithium Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) progressing on track for mid-2022, led by Vulcan's in-house team and Hatch Ltd. Pilot plant and laboratory studies, which are informing the DFS, are successfully demonstrating multi-cycle sorption tests on Upper Rhine Valley geothermal brine using multiple commercially available aluminate-based sorbents from partners including DuPont, providing optionality. Offsite lithium electrolysis test work is also ongoing. Strategy of the DFS team is to standardise the design of the DLE plants where possible, allowing for relatively modular engineering and build out in subsequent phases. New Vulcan laboratory to officially open in the town of Karlsruhe-Durlach in January, with full in-house analytical capability. Long lead items are on order and major skids are under construction for a new Demonstration Plant (Demo Plant), designed by the technical team of the Vulcan Group, which will demonstrate the full process from Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) to lithium hydroxide production. The DLE section of the Demo Plant is targeted to commence operation on geothermal brine in Second Quarter 2022, to an approximately 1:200 scale of the first commercial plant. The Demo Plant enables the Vulcan team to run the full process onsite and to provide training prior to first commercial plant operation, which is targeted for 2024. DFS, lithium piloting and laboratory studies update: Vulcan's Lithium Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) for Phase 1 of its Zero Carbon LithiumTM Project is progressing on track for mid-2022, led by Vulcan's in-house team and by independent consultants Hatch Ltd, who also led Vulcan's Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) published in 2021, and Scoping Study published in 2020. The strategy of the DFS team is to standardise the design of the DLE plants where possible, allowing for relatively modular engineering and build out in subsequent phases. Pilot plant and laboratory studies, which are informing the DFS, are continuing to successfully demonstrate multi-cycle sorption tests on Upper Rhine Valley geothermal brine using multiple commercially available aluminate-based sorbents, providing commercial optionality for Vulcan. All sorbents have demonstrated >90% lithium recovery, in line with the assumptions used in the PFS, and consistent with commercial DLE development projects internationally. Pre-treatment and post-treatment of the brine has also been demonstrated successfully, the former to enhance sorbent life and performance, and the latter to return the brine to materially the same state prior to re-injection. Whilst assuming pre and post treatment in its PFS and now DFS as a base case, Vulcan's Research & Development team is also working on reducing the need for pre-treatment, which could provide an upside in terms of operating cost reduction. Vulcan will base its assumptions in the DFS on the performance of these sorbents, as it did in the PFS, and will be negotiating supply contracts with the sorbent manufacturers in the meantime. Importantly, the pilot plant is operating using "live" geothermal brine3, that is, real (not synthetic) brine coming directly from an operational geothermal plant.

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited Successfully Produces Its First Battery Quality Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate (LHM) from Piloting Operations

2021-09-26 23:27:00

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited announced that its chemical engineering team has successfully produced its first battery quality lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) from piloting operations. The LHM was produced from Vulcan's sorption pilot plant, located at a geothermal renewable energy plant in the Upper Rhine Valley in Germany, with downstream electrolysis processing offsite, as per Vulcan's planned commercial Zero Carbon Lithium Project. The sample exceeds traditional battery grade LHM product including best on the market battery grade specifications required from offtake customers, at >56.5% LiOH.H2O and very low impurities. The lithium chloride extracted by the sorbent in the pilot plant was recovered with water and sent offsite, where it was purified and concentrated by a third-party provider to prepare the lithium chloride for electrolysis to produce lithium hydroxide solution. The solution was then crystalized to produce battery grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM). Data generated during the production of the sample will be used for Vulcan's ongoing Definitive Feasibility Study currently being carried out by Hatch and Vulcan's engineering teams. Vulcan's pilot has been operating successfully since April 2021, using brine from a geothermal plant, and will be progressively scaled up in size during the coming year.

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited Announces Life Cycle Assessment Results

2021-08-03 22:20:00

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited announced that having originally commissioned the world's first Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and global study on the environmental footprint of lithium hydroxide (LHM) production, Vulcan recently again commissioned Minviro Ltd., to update its independent LCA based on more recent data from Vulcan's Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS). Results of the updated LCA estimate negative 2.9t of CO2 emitted per tonne of LHM to be produced from Vulcan's Zero Carbon Lithium™ Project, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Vulcan's negative CO2 emission intensity is a product of the significant impact offset generated by renewable geothermal energy production as well as use of geothermal heat to drive lithium processing, and Vulcan's move to strictly exclude fossil fuels as an energy source from its planned operations. According to public data, this result confirms that Vulcan's Zero Carbon Lithium™ Project has the lowest planned carbon footprint in the world compared to any LCA results previously published in the lithium industry. The LCA was conducted according to ISO-14040:2006 and ISO- 14044:2066 standards and included a third-party expert review. The LCA also confirms a low water usage and water scarcity factor, compared to traditional forms of lithium production. The Zero Carbon LithiumTM Project has been designed from its inception to help decarbonise the German electrical grid and lithium supply chain simultaneously.

Balance Sheet Analysis

Two main balance sheet metrics are driving the positive outlook for Vulcan's financial strength going forward. Vulcan did a great job related to equity this period, which stood at 206.4, representing a 60.0% change. Companies in the same sector and market capitalization will usually be affected by up to 5.9 percent by this parameter. These metrics are all the more impressive relative to their peers and should support an upswing in their stock price. The company's equity movement component, therefore, received a grade of 80. Also, Vulcan reported a positive trendline in their cash and cash equivalents metrics. Specifically, they reported that cash and cash equivalents were 134.5, representing 17.3% change from the last report. This impressive growth, specifically in contrast to their industry peers' performance, should support an upswing in the company's stock price. Therefore, its cash and cash equivalents movement earned a score of 74. However, one discouraging result, Liabilities, stood out. At filing, Vulcan's liabilities were 7.0, representing a 153.4% change from the previous period. These liabilities metrics show that management has been unsuccessful in encouraging healthy growth while managing liabilities. Therefore, we rated their liabilities movement with a score of 39. Therefore, we scored the company's balance sheet a 67.

Income Statement Analysis

Vulcan appears likely to maintain its strong income statement metrics and momentum going forward. Vulcan's financials reveal an interesting trend for their revenue efficiency. This characteristic can affect companies in the same industry and market capitalization by up to 24.0%. Their revenue efficiency, specifically in contrast to their industry peers', should support a positive movement in the company's stock price. As a result, its revenue efficiency earned a score of 87. Also, Vulcan's reported return on equity (ROE) ratio was -8.9, representing a change of 43.0%. These numbers show that management has successfully encouraged growth while managing ROE and ROA metrics, especially relative to their peers. Consequently, their return factors received a grade of 84. However, one discouraging result, EBITDA, stood out. Vulcan's EBIDTA now sits at -10.6 and represents -6.0% change from the last reporting period. This metric might have a 20.0 percent impact on companies in the same industry and with the same market capitalization. The company's EBITDA metrics highlight a difficult overall financial situation, which may, unfortunately, continue moving forward unless management makes significant changes. Therefore, their EBITDA component earned a score of 67. Its income statement, therefore, earned a score of 78.
