Lam Research Corporation Teams Up with Sk Hynix to Enhance Dram Production Cost Efficiency with Breakthrough Dry Resist Euv Technology

2022-06-14 13:00:00

Lam Research Corporation announced that SK hynix Inc. has selected Lam's innovative dry resist fabrication technology as a development tool of record for two key process steps in the production of advanced DRAM chips. A breakthrough technology introduced by Lam in 2020, dry resist extends the resolution, productivity, and yield of Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, a pivotal technology used in the production of next-generation semiconductors. Through Lam's work with SK hynix and ongoing collaboration with ecosystem partners on dry resist technology, the company continues to take a leadership role in driving patterning innovations to remove the roadblocks associated with scaling to future memory nodes with EUV lithography. First developed by Lam in collaboration with ASML and IMEC, dry resist technology offers several advantages over conventional chemically amplified resist patterning for EUV lithography. Dry resist technology solutions significantly enhance EUV sensitivity and the resolution of each wafer pass, enabling patterns to better adhere to the wafer and improving performance and yield. In addition, Lam's dry resist development approach offers key sustainability benefits by consuming less energy and five to ten times less raw materials than traditional chemical wet resist processes.

Lam Research Corporation Introduces Suite of Selective Etch Tools to Accelerate Chipmakers’ 3D Roadmaps

2022-02-09 14:00:00

Lam Research Corporation announced a new suite of selective etch products that apply breakthrough wafer fabrication techniques and novel chemistries to support chipmakers in the development of gate-all-around (GAA) transistor structures. Composed of three new products – Argos®, Prevos™ and Selis® – Lam’s selective etch portfolio provides a powerful advantage in the design and manufacture of advanced logic and memory semiconductor solutions. Lam’s selective etch solutions provide the ultra-high, tunable selectivity and damage-free material removal required to support advanced logic nanosheet or nanowire formation, enabling chipmakers to make the next evolutionary leap from planar to three-dimensional structures for DRAM as it reaches its planar scaling limit. The Lam selective etch portfolio is composed of three new tools: Argos, with revolutionary MARS™ (Metastable Activated Radical Source) technology, selectively modifies and decontaminates wafer surfaces. Its treatment and conditioning capabilities enable chipmakers to treat wafer surfaces precisely, optimizing them for peak performance. Prevos enables atomic layer precision, ultra-high selectivity etching for oxide, silicon, and metal by combining novel chemistries and innovative vapor technology with agile temperature control. Prevos leverages a new proprietary chemical technology solution developed by Lam; additional chemistries can be added to support chipmakers’ production needs. Selis uniquely employs both radical and thermal etch capabilities to enable ultra-high selective etching with uniform top to bottom process control without causing damage to the wafer structure. Prevos and Selis can also be delivered as a single, integrated tool to provide unique multi-layer selective etching, improved queue-time control, and maximum production flexibility.

Lam Research Corp. Unveils Syndion GP to Help Chipmakers Meet Demand for Advanced Power Devices

2021-12-07 14:30:00

Lam Research Corp. announced Syndion® GP: a new product that provides deep silicon etch capabilities to chipmakers developing next generation power devices and power management integrated circuits used in the automotive, electric power delivery and energy industries. As technologies in these sectors become more advanced, the need for higher power, improved performance and greater density at the chip level increases, requiring greater cross-wafer uniformity for higher aspect-ratio structures. These enhancements can be achieved by moving to an advanced device structure without sacrificing form factor. To do that, device manufacturers need a very precise and uniform deep silicon etch process. Syndion GP is designed to support this precision manufacturing process and can be configured to manufacture devices at 200 mm and 300 mm wafer sizes, providing a simplified transition path to increased capacity. Currently, many power devices are manufactured on 200 mm diameter silicon wafers; but to support increased demand, production is migrating to 300 mm wafers. The Syndion GP solution builds on Lam’s deep silicon etch capabilities and extends its suite of specialty technology offerings. Specialty technologies refer to power devices, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), analog and mixed signal semiconductors, radio frequency IC (RF) solutions, optoelectronic devices, and CMOS image sensors (CIS) that support a broad range of consumer and industrial technologies and applications, such as electric vehicles, the internet of things and 5G. Syndion GP expands Lam’s extensive deep silicon etch portfolio that includes the production-proven 200 mm DSiE™ platform and market-leading 300 mm Syndion GS for packaging, hybrid memory, and CMOS image sensor markets. Syndion GP offers the flexibility in meeting both the precision control and improved productivity for high volume manufacturing processes - all demonstrating the diverse range of deep silicon etch solutions required to address the next generation device challenges.

Lam Research Corp. announced the expansion of its manufacturing footprint in Oregon with a new 45,000 square foot facility in the city of Sherwood, planned to open in December 2021. Lam is one of the largest suppliers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in the world, and this new site will supply chipmakers with the critical tools needed to build chips that power advanced electronic devices. The new facility is Lam’s fifth manufacturing site in the United States and will further enhance its resilience and ability to meet increasing customer demand, as chip suppliers seek to ramp up production globally. Lam expects its new facility to create approximately 300 new jobs and career opportunities for residents of the Sherwood and Washington County communities, including armed forces veterans, college students and high school graduates. Many of the openings will be staffed through Lam’s contracted staffing agencies, including Acara Solutions and Randstad USA. Benefits are expected to include a multi-week paid training program that teaches highly sought-after skills for semiconductor and technology industry jobs, a sign-on bonus, competitive wages, paid time-off options, paid holidays, and healthcare coverage.

Balance Sheet Analysis

Lam Research's balance sheet factors had several troubling metrics this period. Lam Research publishes discouraging results related to book value factors in this report. As of the current filing, price to book ratio (P/B) was reported as 10.0, representing a -36.4% change from the previous report. This characteristic can affect companies in the same industry and market capitalization by up to 8.8%. Their book value factor metrics are even more concerning when compared to their peers. Disappointing results in book value factors typically precede negative pressure in stock prices, so its book value factors received a grade of 45. Also, Lam Research's management did a relatively poor job managing cash and cash equivalents, which now sit at 4194.7 and represents a -17.5% change from the last reporting period. Consequently, their cash and cash equivalents movement received a grade of 51. On the other hand, Assets, jumped out as looking rather positive. Lam Research's management was effective in managing the value of the assets on their balance sheet, which now sits at 16589.0 and represents a -0.6% change from the previous report. This growth should support upward pressure on its's stock price, which better captures their intrinsic value. The company's asset component, therefore, received a grade of 77. Therefore, it received a cautionary score of 59.

Lam Research is doing a remarkable job of keeping its asset turnover under control. At filing, their asset turnover metrics were 1.1, representing a 1.9% change from the previous period. Companies in the same industry and market capitalization are typically affected by this parameter by up to 10.7%. The company's asset turnover movement, therefore, received a grade of 75. Also, Lam Research's strong net cash flow numbers, which were 518.9 in this filing, showed a -62.9% change from the last period. This industry-leading net cash flow momentum should reinforce broader positive momentum for its's stock price going forward. The company's net cash flow, therefore, received a grade of 72. At the same time, one critical cash flow metric, Capital Expenditure, was notably weak.
